Narora Barrage

Description - The original Narora headworks were constructed from the year 1872 to 1878 as per the Bligh theory, suitable to meet a maximum flood of 5664 cumecs (2.00 lakh cusecs).

The Narora weir faced severe weather only 2 years after its completion when a flood discharge of 7930 cumecs (2,80,000 cusecs) filled the weir, although there was no damage to the weir, the headwork had to be increased for higher discharge. The need to remodel was immediately felt. After this episode in 1898, the dam faced a major disaster. Downstream the floor was removed, the weir wall was sited.

In 1924 a discharge of 11,045 cumecs (3,90,000 cusecs) passed over the dam, if the Haribaba dam and railway line had not been breached during the flood, the discharge at Narora dam would have been around 12,744 cumecs (4,50,000 cusecs) Bligh’s All the dams built in Punjab on the basis of theory either failed or were badly damaged within a short period of time after their construction. Incidentally, the Ramganga River Project was also started in 1963 to increase the supply.

Construction - The barrage is constructed 304.40 meters downstream from the old dam to feed the Lower Ganga Canal, which originates from the right bank of the river, no channel originates from the left. The barrage is designed for a maximum flood of 14160 cumecs (5,00,000 cusecs).

In 1967, Narora barrage was constructed on the river Ganga at Narora place in Tehsil Dibai of Bulandshahr district, 61 gates, 922 meters in length on this barrage. Through the Ramganga feeder, 5000 cusecs water from the Kalagarh dam that is constructed on the Ramganga river is supplied to the river Ganga near Garhmukteshwar in the Rabi season.

This water is controlled at the Narora barrage built on the river Ganga in Bulandshahr district, from where the work area of the Ramganga organization begins. Lower Ganga Canal and parallel Lower Ganga Canal emerge from Narora Barrage. Under the Lower Ganga canal system, 07 branch canals emerge from which irrigation facilities are provided in 989 canals in the organization.
